Marvel at the unique architectural design of the 18th century house with its contrasting baroque and palladian wings and dramatic dome, inside world renowned works of art sit amid lavish interiors. The 1,000 acres of parkland incorporate rolling lawns, lakes, fountains, temples, woodland, ornamental walled garden and children's playground.

A range of shops and cafes provide plenty of opportunity to treat yourself; the stable courtyard with free admission includes a farm shop, cafe and coffee shop, gift shop and garden centre.

Castle Howard is also a thriving rural estate with many traditional enterprises such as farming and forestry. The profits generated from all estate businesses contribute towards the on-going restoration and conservation of 200 listed buildings and monuments.

Stay with us
One day is rarely enough to fully experience Castle Howard and the surrounding towns, countryside, moor and coast of Yorkshire so stay a little longer in our idyllic Lakeside Holiday Park or book to stay in one of our holiday cottages.

Our cosy holiday cottages are situated in the picturesque village of Coneysthorpe which is just a stone’s throw from Castle Howard. The Lakeside Holiday Park can also be found in Conesythrope, which has a dedicated area for tents and hard-standing for carvans and motorhomes.

With lots of footpaths and bridleways to explore the Howardian Hills and North York Moors National Park, the Holiday Park is ideally located for walkers and cyclists. Alternatively, if you prefer to tour by car, or enjoy sightseeing, shopping and dining out, the Holiday Park is within easy reach of York, Malton, Pickering, Helmsley and the coastal resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.

Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park is open from 1 March until 31 October and is suitable for families and groups. For more information or to make a booking, please call the Park Manager on 01653 648316 between 9am and 5pm

  • Wonderful gardens

We had a wonderful walk around the grounds and gardens of this beautiful estate and luckily for us there were very few people about. Absolutely stunning place and then a most delicious lunch in the cafe of home made mushroom soup which was fab and I would very highly recommend it if it is on the menu. Staff were very welcoming and allowed us to take our dog Gus in with us. Very highly recommend this place.

  • Castle Howard family day

Stunning place. Plenty of parking and an adorable tractor train with different drop off and pick ups. Continues most of the day, super handy as there's a lot of walking to be done, that helps cut out some of it. The house itself is breathtaking, (area to store pushchairs before you go round) the gardens with amazing flowers and grounds with sculptures, temples and fountains are like another world, so beautiful and tranquil. The little boat ride was lots of fun and the children adored the adventure playground. Super little cafes around the whole place for coffees, ice creams and snacks Really great day, can't wait to go back.

  • A winter walk

Only the grounds were open for us to visit but still plenty to keep us busy. We walked round the large lake and eventually down the the cafe for a warm snack lunch. Lots of snowdrops in the walled gardens. Would be good to visit at other times of year to see the contrast of the seasons.

  • A Gem of Yorkshire

Castle Howard/Howard family has a strange motto if translations are correct but the place itself is superb even in Winter. The house is not open and maybe they could learn from Ripley Castle who offer free access to the grounds during winter months because the entry fee is too much for Winter. It is good just to wander around the grounds, surrounding woodland and to the boathouse café by the lake - where drinks/food are reasonably priced. Nice to sit and have a drink while watching the wild birds in and around the lake
