Travel behind Hawk, Owl, Fox, Badger, Jay or Katie, our friendly little engines here at the home of Yorkshire’s Great Little Steam Trains. Climb aboard for a scenic journey along our 15” narrow-gauge railway, through the beautiful South Pennine foothills to our Shelley terminus where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Visit the Shelley station Tea Room for refreshments or enjoy our large picnic area whilst the kids play in the outdoor play area. At Clayton West, the outdoor play area is ideal for children to ‘let off some steam’ whilst the adults browse our extensive shop.

The Café serves hot and cold food and drink whenever the Railway is open.

Special events held include: A Day Out with Thomas, Easter Eggspress, Steam & Diesel Gala, Halloween Ghost Trains and the Santa Specials. We cater for groups, school visits, childrens birthdays, private functions and we also offer Driver Experience courses.

Open throughout the year - see our website for details.

  • Our grandson, age 2 absolutely loved this,so much so the train driver took us on an extra go around. The trains are cute and the park is lovely. Well worth the visit and the memory’s.
Also the people running this do it for the love of it. The money I suspect just keeps them ticking over. X thanks xx

  • We visited on 23.12.2017 to take our 2 year old on the Santa train experience. We had a great time. The trip was very well planned and organised. The staff were all lovely and friendly. We will definatley return next year. I'm not sure who loved it the most, my husband or my little girl. And Santa was fab!! EmmaG986

  • Fantastic for children. Interior of tunnel as train slows down, becomes a light show. Train stops at terminus and gives time for a bite to eat or pot of tea, and a visit to Santa Stuart B, Huddersfield, UK

  • Visited with 4 and 2 year old grandsons, both Thomas fans. They loved it from small train trip round the pond, donkey rides, meeting fat controller and, of course, the engines. Well organised and credit should go to the many volunteers who do a wonderful job. Could have done with a little more choice in the cafe, but otherwise a great day. Brenda H, Holmfirth, UK

  • I came here with some friends and there young children during the day out with Thomas event.

It was particularly busy but thankfully there was plenty of car parking available. The cafe at Clayton West did some really nice grub and considering how busy it was, the staff were fairly on their game.

We took the train ride up before making use of the attractions at the top of the railway line, everything was included barring the additional food and drinks we had.

The staff were friendly except for a couple of staff members I spoke with, but this was made up by a staff member at Shelley (I think he was called Chris) who couldn’t do enough to help us out, truly a credit. Certainly made up for the negativity displayed by others and pushes my review from 4 to 5 stars.

The activities at the bottom end of the railway were also great and again, included in the price.

All in all, a fab day out and I would certainly recommend anyone with children to consider visiting.

  • This attraction has been going for some considerable time now and never fails to deliver something different every time you visit. We used to take our grandchildren to all the events and we, as adults, always enjoyed the experience. Give it a try what your age is. Anne W, Huddersfield, UK
