ABOUT THE DEVONSHIRE ARMS HOTEL & SPA
The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa as we see it today was built in the early 17th century, though there had been a place of hospitality on this site for much longer than that.
It came into the ownership of the 4th Duke of Devonshire in 1753 as part of the Bolton Abbey Estate. It was further developed by the 5th Duke, a man well ahead of his time. He realised the importance of visitors to the area and ensured many miles of footpaths were established so that visitors could admire the splendid views. The area attracted poets and artists alike, including Wordsworth and Turner.
During the 19th century the Royal Family would stay at Bolton Abbey for grouse shoots and The Devonshire Arms, which was often used for hospitality, expanded, so that by 1840 it could stable twenty horses and four carriages.
The coming of the railway in 1888 and the motor car in the early 20th century placed new demands on the hotel, so the Cavendish Pavilion was built by the riverside to provide refreshments and is now a popular place for country lovers of all ages.
In 1981 the hotel underwent a major refurbishment and additional bedroom were added, under the supervision of Her Grace the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire. Her personal touch is still evident throughout. Much of the artwork has come from Chatsworth’s Devonshire Collection, one of the finest private art collections in Europe, making the ideal choice for an array of important private and public occasions and events.

A YorkshireWeekend
Just returned from a lovely weekend spent at the Devonshire Arms hotel and spa and wanted to say a huge thank you to Hannah in the air conditioned spa who gave me one of the best full body massage to the extent I would consider visiting again just to see her and experience it all over again -I have travelled worldwide and had numerous massages but none in all my years as good as Hannah’s !
I also wanted to say amazing well done to the chef Paul - our taster menu we experienced on Saturday night was definitely worthy of at least a couple of Michelin stars- it was out of this world - again I have eaten in Michelin star restaurants all over the world and this food I would place on the same level.
The hotel was busy and very hot no air conditioning in the bedrooms . Thank goodness we had brought our own Dyson cooling fan with us !
We will definitely be back - thank you! jmullen2018, Yorkshire

Stop over night
We stopped for the night with our dog. Great standard of service very comfy room and very good facilities for the dog. Food is great in the brasserie and again very guest focused. Highly recommend this hotel for a visit. Cammy-M73, Edinburgh

Still Marvellous
Having stayed here some time ago I expected our stay to be very good.
Arrival was great, met by friendly door and reception staff and check in was hassle free.
The suite was of a high standard, we don't normally book four posters, but that's all they had available, it was comfortable and plenty of space, spotlessly clean and had views towards the River Wharfe over the local countryside.
Staff were brilliant at arranging flowers for a birthday bouquet, without anyone knowing until they were presented at dinner (well done Team Devonshire Arms!).
Very DOG FRIENDLY which was appreciated, likewise plenty of walks nearby for you and the dog.
There's a good size car park, which is secure with cctv. Although if you're driving a convertible/Volante you'd want to avoid the trees over hanging to stop sap on your roof/paintwork.
It's a different team running the hotel now, combined with our experience of the Burlington Restaurant on this trip we'd say they're better than our previous visit.
Thank you for a marvellous trip, hopefully we can get back in September for some fishing on the estate. Richard-de-G, Weybridge

The perfect place to spoil yourself
Had a one night stay at this wonderful luxurious hotel. The location is superb and if you feel like a 'treat' then this is a must. The staff were all exceptionally welcoming. Our room was large and full of character. A very large bed gave us a wonderful nights sleep. We didn't use the spa but I think is it advisable to book any treatments in advance of your stay as it seemed very busy. Certainly a re-visit hotel ajed9, North Yorkshire
