The Farm

The National Trust bought Heber Farm in 1994 to help preserve it as the last working farm in the village.

Tenanted by us since then, the farm keeps us busy with 600 sheep, plus cattle including a developing herd of Belted Galloways. As hill farming becomes less able to survive commercially in today’s economy the new herd provides a more viable breed, naturally equipped to live outdoors without the costs associated with indoor accommodation and feeding.

Garry is on the steering group for the Yorkshire Dales National Park looking at ‘higher nature farming’ practices as a means to long term sustainable farming methods that benefit the environment.

The Community

We know that we are very fortunate to be able to live in this magnificent place and work hard to ensure that our vibrant Buckden community adapts and continues to survive the challenges of our changing world.

It was the Tour de France Le Grande Depart in 2014 which inspired a temporary camping site on the meadow. It was so successful that we developed the idea to help provide a sustainable income to support and complement the farm.

While farming is a struggle against the environment, embracing its magnificence and sharing it with visitors through tourism enables us to protect the future working economy of the village.

As such, the continuing development of our campsite is welcomed by our fellow villagers as a sustainable community initiative providing opportunities for local employment. It is also encouraged by the Yorkshire Dales National Park which is working to encourage the regeneration of the natural landscape which has been over-grazed by centuries of sheep farming.

Garry has been Chairman of the Parish Council since 2002 and was instrumental in establishing the Upper Wharfedale Community Venturer Bus Service, a successful service which filled the void when public transport cuts left Buckden potentially isolated for those unable to drive.

  • Our first visit to Buckden over the New Year period certainly won't be our last.
We stayed for 3 nights as a family of 4 in the Highland pod, whilst our friends had the Swaledale. Gill greeted us a couple of hours after arrival to make sure we had everything we needed, and gave us a few pointers for things to do in the area.
Nothing was too much trouble and we even had chocolate and a bottle of Prosecco for New Years Eve! Unexpected but very much appreciated!
There are a number of lovely pubs in the local area and some great walks around the site.
If you want to travel a little further afield or walking isn't your thing then you have the whole of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales on your doorstep.
We love this area so much and it doesn't matter which direction you travel in, you'll find some stunning scenery and some very special places.
Shower/Toilet in the pod field was out of action, which Gill was very apologetic about but the other shower and toilet in the farmyard was only a short distance from the pods so no problem at all.
Hot water was hot!! Unusual for a campsite, and very welcome for a shower in the colder months!
We camp a lot and have visited some lovely places, but Buckden is one of our favourites now!
We'll certainly be returning to Buckden Camping, either in the pods in the colder months or camping in the Spring/Summer.

  • Only stayed one night but had a fantastic time. The owners are incredibly welcoming & take the time to speak to all visitors & make the feel at home.

Facilities are brilliant & match the amazing surroundings.
The local shop has everything you may have left at home, a god send for me!

Not a huge site but that’s what the owners want & matched what I was looking for exactly.

    Thanks for a great stay.

    Will definitely be returning.

  • Me, my partner and our 2 boys (10 & 14) have just had 3 nights at Buckden in the Galloway pod. We’ve been pod camping a few times now and this place is up there as one of our faves. Owners are incredibly friendly, the pod was spacious (sleeps 5) and the facilities were excellent. Shower is very hot and powerful, anyone with long hair will be able to wash their hair no probs!! 😝 It was very cold whilst we were there but the pod was toasty. Our boys visited the shop a few times, they were very complimentary about it. The Buck Inn is just across the road, foods pricey but the welcome is very warm. Lots of walks out of the site if you don’t want to drive and the volunteer bus service is infrequent but cheap. Would thoroughly recommend and our boys were promised Wi-fi would be installed for our next visit!?! Deb C

  • Just returned home from a fabulous 2 night stop in the Highland pod with my husband & teenage daughter. Lovely little campsite in a fantastic location offering excellent clean facilities. The pod has lighting, electric kettle, plug sockets & an electric heater. Gill the owner was very friendly & accommodating with us which we really appreciated.
There is a local pub across the road offering good beer, but we were the only ones in!😱
We shall look forward to our next visit
