Easter Fun at Beamish

Fri 30th Mar - Mon 2nd Apr

Enjoy a cracking day out at Beamish this Easter with lots of egg-citing activities happening at the museum.

Here’s just some of the fun we’ve got planned:

Take part in our Easter egg trail. Can you find all the eggs the Easter Bunny has hidden around the museum?
See (and taste!) traditional Easter baking across the museum including fish on Good Friday.

Call in at Herron’s Bakery in The Town to purchase a delicious hot cross bun or a piece of simnel cake.
There will be a chance to make an Easter card in The Pit Village school on Saturday or why not make an Easter bonnet on Easter Sunday or Monday?

On Easter Sunday and Monday, Georgian folk will be decorating eggs to jarp at Pockerley Old Hall, visitors can help with Easter preparations, as well as making a paper flower to take home.

If you’re visiting us on Easter Sunday, head to the dentist’s waiting room in The Town, where you can decorate an egg, and on Easter Monday we’ll be rolling the eggs in The Town park at 11am, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. Whose will go the furthest?

Our 1940s Farm will be making carrot lollies (a real treat!) and getting all crafty with Easter cards and rabbit finger puppet making.

Beamish was the vision of Dr Frank Atkinson, the Museum’s founder and first director.

Frank had visited Scandinavian folk museums in the early 1950s and was inspired to create an open air museum for the North East. He realised the dramatically-changing region was losing its industrial heritage. Coal mining, ship building and iron and steel manufacturing were disappearing, along with the communities that served them.

Frank wanted the new museum to “illustrate vividly” the way of life of “ordinary people” and bring the region’s history alive.
Beamish remains true to his principles today and brings history to life for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Experience amazing sights, sounds, smells and delicious tastes as the past comes to life. Beamish is unique - our objects aren't locked away in glass cases, this is hands-on history!

Step into the past and explore our 350 acre site, as Beamish tells the story of the people of North East England in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. Taste traditional food from a coal-fired range, hop on board a tram or steam train, play schoolyard games together and pop into the Co-op shops.

Come back time and time again with your Beamish Unlimited Pass, which allows 12 months free entry to the museum from your visit - including all day time special events!
