Yorkshire Dales - South

Home > Yorkshire Dales - South

The Southern Dales features the finest limestone scenery in Britain. There are potholes, dry valleys, limestone pavements and deep caves in abundance. These geological wonders are natural treasure troves and provide precious environments where peregrine falcons cruise the sky and nest on limestone crags, the song of the curlew fills the springtime air and it is reputed that merlins live in the moorland, this unique district will capture your imagination. The very popular Pateley Bridge area is definitely worth a visit.Yorkshire Dales - South
As well as magnificent panoramic views, mysterious phenomenon such as the Howgill's with its huge outcrop of stones is one of the many strange natural landmarks across the land. 'The White Scar caves' and 'Stump Cross Caverns' house a maze of underground waterfalls and streams along with thousands of stalactites and stalagmites. It takes around 80 minutes to complete the 1 mile trail through 'The White Scar Caves', a worth while and exciting journey. If you love waterfalls you will not be disappointed in the Dales, visit Ingleton to see a series of spectacular falls.
The South Dales boasts many castles and abbeys, one of the most impressive being Skipton Castle which is one of Englands finest and best preserved, witha great atmospheric presence. Towns like Skipton (pictured), Ingleton and Grassington are bustling; traditionalism meets modern society in perfect unification. The undoubted charm of the small market towns such as Masham and Bentham breathe character and productivity. Given the nature of the Dales, it is not surprising that there is a large variety of crafts on display and for sale. For something a little different visit 'Brymor Ice Cream Parlour' at High Jervaulx or the 'Black Sheep Brewery' at Masham; both will titilate your taste buds.Yorkshire Dales - South
Accommodation is plentiful in the towns with lots of hotels and inns but the countryside is dotted with wonderful quality B&Bs and you will never be far away from somewhere hearty to eat. For the active, this is a fantastic place for walking or cycling and there are several great golf courses. If you prefer a more sedate pace, it is the ideal place for bird watching and fishing. Throughout the summer there are splendid festivals and local shows but if you are looking for peace and quiet, lose yourself in awesome isolation and revel in the timeless heritage of a virtually unaltered district.
