Yorkshire Dales - North
Home > Yorkshire Dales - North | From castles to working farms steeped in tradition, to museums and country houses, the Dales perfectly shows an area that has nurtured and protected its heritage. Its history is revered by local people as well as tourists. There is a wealth of wonderful places to visit, and plenty to do. The North Dales are vast and the landscape varied but they are always inspirational. You will need plenty of time and a tank full of petrol if you intend to cover the area! Hardraw Force near Hawes is England's highest single drop waterfall and is typical of the natural beauty of the Dales. Hawes is the home of Wensleydale cheese and is a bustling market town. It has some fine shops, antiques, cafes and restaurants. There's accommodation to suit every pocket from the elegant Stone House Hotel and Simonstone Hall to a wealth of guest houses and bed and breakfasts in the town. There are also some very comfortable holiday cottages located in the surrounding countryside. | |
 | Swaledale is synomous with sheep and wool and Reeth; its main town is where you will find the Swaledale Folk Museum. Situated in the old Wesleyan School, its echoes of the past depicts family life within the local sheep farming and lead mining communities. Wool has long been a major industry in the dales and there are still outlets where you can purchase machine and hand knitted woollens made from local yarns. Reeth has an abundance of craft workshops and tearooms, sit and enjoy the views from the expansive village green. |
| The Northern Dales are saturated with Medieval Fortresses, among them are Brough Castle, Pendragon Castle, Richmond Castle, Middleham Castle and Castle Bolton; the film location for 'Elizabeth'. For more theatrics, Middleham and Richmond Castles play host to Medieval re-enactments, dramatic entertainment indeed and not for the faint of heart. For the hustle and bustle of larger towns Leyburn, Hawes, Richmond, Reeth and Sedbergh are busy market towns with lots to see and do. | |
 | Middleham not only has the impressive Castle which was the childhood home of Richard lll and historic centre of Wensleydale in Medieval times but it still has a thriving community with a strong connection to the racing fraternity. A familiar sight in Middleham's streets is the procession of race horses taking their daily exercise. |
