Richmond
Home > Richmond | Richmond Castle is a Norman castle built in the 1100s. It towers over 100 feet high and was a military garrison until earlier this century. The views from the top are spectacular and like no other in Britain. Below the castle is the cobbled market place; 900 years on and it still holds the Saturday market. The 12th century church is in the centre of the market place and houses the Green Howards Museum. A Prentice bell is rung here at 8am and a curfew at 8pm. The bells are also rung on Shrove Tuesday to tell the ladies to get their frying pans out (or so the legend says!). | |
 | There are many great shops leading off from the market place and cafes and tearooms to relax and unwind in. The three museums in Richmond include the Georgian Theatre and museum; showcasing Keane, Kemble and Macready, The Richmondshire Museum; reminding people of the lead-mining days of Swaledale and as already mentioned the Green Howards Museum illustrating the military history of the town. Catterick racecourse is very close by and offers great entertainment night and day during the summer. There are great walks around Richmond-the best way to explore the beautiful scenery the town lies in. |
| Restaurants are often bustling with diners so it is recommended to book if eating out, hotels and guest houses offer great accommodation at reasonable prices in lovely Georgian houses. Holiday cottages provide self-catering accommodation for those wanting more independence and there are camping and caravan sites for those wanting to experience the true Dales! |
| Located at the North of the Yorkshire Dales just off Scotch Corner, Richmond has great road links. |
