Great Ayton
Home > Great Ayton | Captain Cook lived in the village from the age of 8 to 16. The school where he was educated now houses an exciting museum celebrating Cook's life and world achievements. To signify his association with Great Ayton, there is a sculpture of Captain Cook standing proudly on High Green, looking towards Staithes, sculpted by Nicholas Dimbleby and unveiled in May 1997. In Low Green lies the 12th century All Saints Church, which Captain James Cook attended. |
| Great Ayton lies at the bottom of Rosemary Topping; a 300m hill with great views over the vale of Cleveland and Middlesbrough. If the views have whetted the appetite, then why not try a gentle two-mile walk to the peak of Roseberry Topping. |
| There are many challenging walks in the area and a good range of shops, mostly situated in the High Street, which together with restaurants, cafes and public houses cater for residents’ and visitors’ usual requirements. Suggitt's Ices and Petch's Pork Pies are particularly well known. Bed and breakfasts and guest houses provide cosy accommodation for a relaxing breather after walking and there are many holiday cottages and farmhouses offering self-catering accommodation. |
| Great Ayton is situated less than 5 miles north of Stokesley on the A173 and south of Guisborough, off the A171, on the A173. |
